Have you seen the movie Sleepless in Seattle wherein the lead characters Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks) and Annie Reed (Meg Ryan) started getting to know each other through a late night radio talk show?
The kind of radio program used in the movie Sleepless in Seattle is a good example of a talk radio broadcast program. Talk radio is a kind of a radio format that involves interaction between listeners as well as the talk radio hosts. Usually the topics involve during the talk program are those that are controversial or “hot topics” of the moment. Although talk radio topics really range from serious to light kind of topics – may it be political, social issues, entertainment topics, health and fitness, or about love and relationship.
What makes talk radio appealing to the public is that there is an interaction among listeners themselves by calling the radio station where the radio program is currently airing. The listeners (who are also callers) can interact as well with the talk radio host or to the guests who are at the radio station (with the talk radio host). It is quite interesting to listen into this kind of radio format because callers either argue or agree into something being talked about. There are those that snapped each other on air, or just simply argue. There are some who can gain allies by basically agreeing into something being talked about on air. It is very appealing to the public because the ones involve, here are true people and their genuine feelings over something. There is no sugarcoating here since there is no script being followed. The opinions and testimonials cited by the callers are spontaneous combustion of expressing respective principles and beliefs.
Talk radio has also been a preferred venue for political debates as well as discussions on special issues. An avid listener on this kind of radio format can really get great thoughts and perspectives about the current affairs around. Also, this can serve as a great source of public pulse on certain issues, especially that involving of governance.
On the lighter side, talk radio programs have also become as the “meeting point” of two future lovers. There were instances before those listeners (who both called-up the radio station in order to interact) have become good friends (while some get into a relationship with each other) after interacting with each other on a certain talk radio program. Just like in the movie Sleepless in Seattle, people can find their future significant others over the radio.
Meanwhile, with the advent of the Internet and other modern technological modes of communication, radio has become less appealing to some people nowadays. People are more inclined now to Internet when it comes to updating themselves on the latest happenings around the globe. However, talk radio programs, have remained true to its goal – that is, people to interact with what are being discussed on the talk radio program.
For the listeners who call to the radio stations that cater to this kind of radio format, they should also be responsible enough to be good on air, and to be responsible enough in using the appropriate words when expressing his/her opinion. It should be remembered that talk radio is aired live, and that whatever you say (as a caller) is being heard by many people, regardless if it’s a minor in age or not. 7
